Working in Shared Lives

What is Shared Lives?

Life is better with other people, but the Shared Lives scheme recognises not everyone has a suitable support system.

The shared lives scheme is designed to provide support for adults who find it harder to live independently. With the shared lives scheme, a person needing care is matched with a suitable carer. Shared lives carers provide physical, emotional, and social support. Shared lives jobs vary from weekly visits to full-time shared living situations.

What are the benefits of a Shared Lives career?

If you’re considering working in Shared Lives, here are a few of the reasons why you might want to get started:

  • Shared Lives is a tailored system, so carers are matched up with those they can support best - which means you can flourish as a carer
  • There are adaptable opportunities available, from daytime visits, to overnight stays, to full-time support
  • Part of Shared Lives is introducing a person to your home life — so, your job can include going on holiday and hosting parties
  • Take control of your career by becoming a self-employed Shared Lives carer
  • Shared Lives often provides a more stable income than some other forms of care work.

Responsibilities in a shared Lives Job

For Shared Lives carers, this is a job with some unexpected responsibilities. Duties can include:

  • Daytime visits and overnight stays
  • Assisting with everyday tasks
  • Teaching life skills
  • Assisting with social activities
  • Hosting and attending events
  • Introducing your supported person to family, friends, and the community.

Interested in starting your Shared Lives career?

You don’t necessarily need formal qualifications for a Shared Lives career, but you will most likely need to undertake a carer assessment. As well as this, your personality is key. You must be patient, flexible, sociable, and happy to help and learn.
