Working as a Supported Living Carer

What Is Supported Living?

Supported living carers provide care for people in their own homes.

Typically, these are individuals who can live independently, but require some extra help and support. A supported living service user might live alone, or within a shared living environment. The level of care needed is unique to the client.

The role covers a range of services, specialised to suit the needs of each client. With a supportive living worker, individuals can live and thrive independently.

What are the benefits of a supported living job?

You might choose to work in supported living because:

  • Focused support for individuals allows carers to really see their clients flourish
  • Differing shift patterns help you to create a schedule that works for you
  • The variety of service users allows you to focus on specialisations
  • Many supported living roles include help in social settings, meaning part of your job might be engaging in community activities
  • Full-time and part-time work is available, for whatever stage of your care career you’re at.

Roles and responsibilities of supported living

Supported living carer jobs are highly dependent on the person receiving care. Responsibilities might include:

  • Overnight stays
  • Personal care such as washing and dressing
  • Assisting with daily tasks
  • Support at college or work
  • Community activities
  • Managing relationships.
